25 years is a long time. But I was reminded today that back in 1992, I started as a contest reporter for Drum Corps World. I may have only done 1 or 2 shows back then, but it was a start.
Since then I have enjoyed some pretty cool highlights in my time on the Drum Corps World staff. Early on, was it 1999 that I covered the division III prelims from high a top Camp Randall Stadium. I remember it went something like this.... it was me, 3 judges in the press box and about 15 fans in the stands each time a corps came on to the field from about 8:00am to maybe 4:00pm in the afternoon. What a long hot day that was! But boy did I have fun!
I soon graduated to a regular columnist writing the II/III Follies. A column focused on the division II & III corps. I also kept up with contest reporting in between there, too. I made some wonderful connections while I was writing that column!
Starting in 2005, I decided I wanted to take my long time love of photography to the sidelines and asked if I could switch to a photographers role -- which Steve allowed and that's where I have been ever since. I don't get to travel as much these days as I have in the past, but I manage to see a good variety of Drum Corps International and Drum Corps Associates shows each summer in this neck of the woods. I also do a regular off season column "Around the World" which is full of news bits and updates from the junior corps world.
While it's true that drum corps media has changed over the years, what we do at Drum Corps World is relevant and meaningful. We travel to shows, offer our views and art for no pay but just a love of what we do. I don't think you'll find a more dedicated group of people than those assembled on this staff.
Thank you Steve Vickers for your continued dedication to this crazy activity we all love. Thank you to my fellow DCW staffers. You are not just friends, but an extended family whom I value greatly. I enjoy working along side you and hope to be able to continue to do so for many years to come.
Wow, 25 years! ... See MoreSee Less
